Helen R. Eckert, 91, Jasper

Helen R. Eckert, 91, of Jasper, died Sunday (June 17) at her home. She was born in St. Anthony July 27, 1926, to Leo C. and Mary (Theising) Wehr. She married Mathew “Butts” Eckert November 23, 1943, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. He died Octobert 12, 1979.

Helen retired from Jasper High School, where she worked for many years in food services. She was also a homemaker and worked as a hostess and waitress at the Heritage Inn in Jasper. She was a member of St. Joseph Church and the St. Anne’s Society. She enjoyed gardening, working outdoors, fishing, babysitting, playing games with her great-grandchildren, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by one son, Charles Eckert and wife Gail, Jasper; four daughters, Phyllis Oeding and husband Kenneth, Ferdinand, Carol Toy and husband Mike, Dale, and Gloria Bueltel and husband Charles and Linda Goeppner and husband Frank, all of Jasper; one son-in-law Gene Mehne, Portersville; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandson.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one daughter, Jan (Eckert) Mehne, and one son, Edward J. Eckert. Helen was the last surviving member of the Leo Wehr family.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and until the service time Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The St. Anne’s Society will pray a rosary at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church or to a favorite charity.
