Southridge Raiders Baseball memorable season comes to an end

Huntingburg (NNDC) – The Southridge Raiders Baseball team ended a very successful season as the Class 2A State Runner up on Saturday with a 5-4 loss to Boone Grove in the title game.   A very large Raider fan base cheered on Southridge in a game played with temperatures in the 90’s and the heat index topping 100 degrees.

Boone Grove pitching ace Ty Bothwell, an Indiana Hoosiers recruit, cruised through the first 6 2/3 innings against Southridge and took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning.   Four of those Boone Grove runs came in the 5th inning while the eventual winning run crossed home plate in the 6th inning on a Southridge throwing error to 3rd base.   The Raiders rallied in the bottom of the 7th as Senior Justin Lammers roped a single into left field to lead off the inning.   Pinch runner Patrick Sander took Lammers spot at first.     Bothwell picked up a strikeout and Sander advanced to 2nd on a groundball by Logan Seger leaving Boone Grove 1 out away from the victory .   Sander advanced to 3rd on a passed ball and Freshman Camden Gasser earned a walk which allowed the Raiders to have runners on 1st and 3rd.   Collin Smith sent the ball into left field which should have ended the game but the Boone Grove left fielder Dylan Paul couldn’t handle the fly ball allowing 2 runs to score and Smith ending up at 2nd.   Tucker Schank dribbled the ball up the 1st base line and beat out the throw for a single leaving the Raiders with runners on the corners.    With the pitch count nearing the maximum of 120 for Bothwell, an intentional walk was issued to Colson Montgomery loading the bases.   The Southridge rally continued as Chase Taylor looped a single to the gap in right field scoring Smith and Schank while bringing the Raiders within 1 and runners on 1st and 3rd.    Bothwell exhausted the maximum amount of pitches allowed and was replaced on the mound with Bryce Morris.    Jayce Harter earned a walk loading the bases for Southridge.    The Raider rally came to an end as Joe Lagrange popped out to the shortstop ending the  comeback.    Ty Bothwell picked up the win after allowing 4 unearned runs in the 7th and Bryce Morris earned the save.   Logan Seger pitched 4-1/3 innings and took the loss for Southridge.

The Raiders finish the season with a 25-7 record and the Class 2A State Runner Up title.

Southridge arrived back in Huntingburg around 9:45pm on Saturday night with a police escort as many Raider baseball fans greeted them at the High School.

During the team reception at the SHS auditorium,  coaches and players took time to recap the tournament and thank the fans.    1st year head coach, Gene Mattingly spoke of his love for the players and their work ethic.   Several Raider fans also spoke of their gratitude toward this team and how well they have represented the School Corporation and community.

Senior Justin Lammers was announced as the winner of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award for Class 2A earlier in the day.    Justin is the son of Brian and Ann Lammers of Huntingburg and will attend Purdue University in the fall.   Lammers is the second Southridge student athlete to receive the Mental Attitude Award this school year as teammate Jayce Harder won the award for Football in November.
