Robert L. Hoppenjans, 82, Bretzville

Robert L. Hoppenjans, 82, of Bretzville, died Wednesday (June 6) at St. Vincent Heart Center in Indianapolis. He was born in Bretzville May 19, 1936, to Henry and Verena (Muth) Hedinger Hoppenjans. He married Sarah M. Jochum June 19, 1958, at St. Henry Catholic Church in St. Henry.

Robert was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church and its St. Joseph Sodality. He retired from OFS Brands Plant No. 2 and was a farmer. His hobbies were cooking turtle soup, hulling walnuts, wine making, working on older Case tractors, and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sarah M. Hoppenjans; four sons, Richard Hoppenjans and wife Carolyn, St. Henry, Gerald “Jerry” Hoppenjans and wife Sharon, Birdseye, James “Jim” Hoppenjans and wife Carolyn, Ferdinand, and Kenneth “Kenny” Hoppenjans and wife Joyce, Fulda; two daughters, Martha Sitzman and husband Gerald, St. Meinrad, and Anna Hoppenjans, Huntingburg; 14 grandchildren, Jessica Eckert, Eric, Nicholas, Chad, Joshua, Jordan, Tyler, Kayala, and Jonathon Hoppenjans, Justin and Heather Bauer, Nathan and Travis E. Sitzman, and Danielle Mayes; 11 great-grandchilden, Channing Eckert, Kailey, August, Holden, Cohen, and Brooklyn Hoppenjans, Kylie, Clay, Charlotte, and Edmund Sitzman, and Madison Albert; and two sisters, Mary Alice Hassfurther, Mariah Hill, and Helen Kraus, Boonville.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters, Irma Reutman, Rose Mary Trowbridge, and Emma Welp, four brothers, Leonard Hoppenjans and Frank, Joseph, and Clarence Hedinger, and several in-laws.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday and from 7-9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Online condolences may be shared at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ferdinand Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
