Rose T. Merkley, 92, St. Anthony

Rose T. Merkley, 92, of St. Anthony, died Friday (April 13) at her home. She was born in Maltersville February 23, 1926, to William and Mary (Buechler) Gutgsell. She married Alban Merkley July 5, 1949, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. He died March 16, 2014.

Rose worked at the General Electric plant in Huntingburg during World War II welding filaments for radio tubes and later retired from Inwood Furniture Company. She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish – St. Anthony Church and its Christian Mothers. She was a past president of the American Legion Post No. 493 Auxiliary, a member of the VFW No. 673 Auxiliary, the St. Anthony Community Center, and the Older American Center. She enjoyed quilting and sewing, cross stitch, gardening, reading, and watching birds.

She is survived by two daughters, Lois June Wagner and husband Daniel, Ferdinand, and Carol Ann Kreilein and husband Michael, St. Anthony; six sons, Stephen L. Merkley and wife Darlene, St. Anthony, Randall A. Merkley and wife Sharon and Michael G. Merkley, all of Huntingburg, Robert F. Merkley and wife Donnettia and Leon K. Merkley and wife Karen, both of Jasper, and Kenny W. Merkley and wife Lisa, Dubois; 21 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Meyer, four brothers, Albert, Victor, Frank, and Roman Gutgsell, and one daughter-in-law, Annette Merkley.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper and from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Church. Members of Divine Mercy parish will lead a rosary at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions made to Divine Mercy Parish or to a favorite Charity. Online condolences may be shared at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
