Leona Kluemper, 98, Jasper

Leona Kluemper, 98, of Jasper, died Thursday (April 12) at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born in Celestine December 22, 1919, to George and Caroline (Schnell) Heldman. She married Wilfred “Bill” Kluemper June 17, 1944. He died September 5, 2007.

Leona and her husband owned and operated the Palm Gardens at Bretzville for 17 years and Bill’s Truck Stop in Birdseye for nine years. She was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, the Brute Society, Ladies Sodality of Precious Blood, and the VFW Post No. 673 Auxiliary. She enjoyed visits from friends, family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved cooking, baking, Bingo, playing the harmonica, and dancing.

She is survived by four daughters, Judith (Morris) Klem and husband Morris, Mary Jo Hart and husband John, and Jackie Seifert and husband Randy, all of Jasper, and Becky Toesch and husband Bill, Ferdinand; seven sons, Donald (Kathy) Kluemper and wife Kathy, St. Anthony, Bob Kluemper and wife Brenda, Villages, Florida, Albert Kluemper and wife Pamela, Ferdinand, and John (Chris) Kluemper and wife Chris, Jim Kluemper and wife Amanda, Willie Kluemper and wife Medea, and Larry Kluemper and wife Connie, all of Jasper; 28 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one brother, Cletus Heldman, Aberdeen, Maryland; and two sisters, Lucille Blume and Delphine Knies, both of Jasper.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Jean Kluemper, two sisters, Albertha Knies and Margaret Schroering, and four brothers, Barnabas, Joseph, Raymond, and Norman Heldman.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper. A rosary will be prayed at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Precious Blood Church with entombment following in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum.
