James B. Knies, 78, St. Anthony

James B. Knies, 78, of St. Anthony, died Monday (April 9). He was born in Celestine in 1939 to Bernard and Albertha (Heldman) Knies. He married Bonnie Bieker July 13, 1963, at St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Jim was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post No. 493 in St. Anthony. He retired as a supervisor for JOFCO in Jasper after 45 years of service. He served with the St. Anthony Volunteer Fire Department, as a first responder for 28 years, and served as director on the fire department for over 50. He was a member of the St. Anthony Community Center and Divine Mercy Parish – St. Anthony Church. He enjoyed camping and was a member of the Camping Hoosiers, fishing, line dancing, playing cards, gardening, and spending time with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Knies; one daughter, Gina Hoffman and husband Ron, Ferdinand; one son, Dean Knies and wife Tricia, Bretzville, four grandchildren, Devinn and Klayton Knies and Bailey and Carson Hoffman; three sisters, Rosetta Hasenour, Connie Schroering, and Sharon Burger and husband Jerry, all of Jasper; and seven brothers, Dennis Knies, St. Anthony, Albert Knies, Huntingburg, Virgil Knies and wife Frances, Bernard Knies and wife Diane, Randall King and wife Frances, and Paul Knies and wife Carol, and Perry Knies and wife Jane, all of Jasper.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest, Vernon, and Jerome Knies, two brothers-in-laws, Delmar Schroering and Tony Hasenour, and two sisters-in-law, Ruth and Cyrilla Knies.

There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Divine Mercy Parish or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be shared at www.becherkluesner.com. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Church with burial following in the church cemetery. St. Anthony American Legion Post No. 493 will conduct military gravesite rites.
