Mary Jane Wagner, 78, St. Anthony

Mary Jane Wagner, 78, of St. Anthony, died Friday (March 16) at Select Specialty Hospital in Evansville. She was born in Jasper March 29, 1939, to Roman and Stella (Henke) Hopf. She married Richard H. Wagner August 21, 1958, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland. He died October 16, 2011.

Mary Jane was a homemaker and worked at Kimball Electronics, the Schnitzelbank, and the Bavarian Inn. She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish – St. Anthony Catholic Church, the church choir, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Christian Mothers, and St. Anthony Home Economics Club. She was a recipient of the Bruté and Mother Teresa Awards. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, gardening, and watching sports, especially attending the grandchildren’s sporting events, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by three daughters, Debbie Brockman and husband Matt, Evansville, Sharon Meyer and husband Matt, Huntingburg, and Lynn Schmitt and husband Todd, Schererville; one son, Jeff Wagner, Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, four sisters, Joan Braunecker, Jasper, Patricia Fleck, and husband Gene, Huntingburg, Kathy Hassler and husband Dennis, Terre Haute, and Martha Blackburn and husband Dan, Evansville.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one daughter, Cindy Wagner, one grandson, Jacob Meyer, and one brother, Kenneth Hopf.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper and from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Church. Divine Mercy Parish will pray a rosary at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Divine Mercy Parish, the Jacob Meyer Memorial Endowment Dubois County Community Foundation ( or to a favorite charity.Online condolences may be shared at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
