Semi crash closes U.S. 231 Monday morning

Jasper (NNDC) – A semi sideswiped a tri-axle truck and ended up going off U.S. 231 after it swerved to avoid a stopped vehicle Monday morning.

Jonathan L. Haskins, 28, Louisville, Kentucky, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia at about 7:10 a.m. pulling a fully-loaded trailer. As he approached the Old Road 45 intersection, Haskins failed to notice a vehicle in front of him slowing to make a left turn. Dubois County Sheriff deputies said Haskins braked and veered left of the roadway’s center where the  Freightliner sideswiped a southbound 2003 Kenworth T800 tri-axle driven by Brian L. Leinenbach, 67, Velpen, according to police.

The Freightliner traveled off the east side of U.S. 231,  over a private drive then striking  a telephone pole and pedestal box before coming to a final rest.

U.S. 231 was shut down for about 30 minutes while heavy-duty wreckers from Ruxer Ford and Stork Service Center removed the semi and trailer from the ditch. The tractor-trailer had to be towed from the scene while Leinenbach’s Kenworth was able to be driven from the scene.

No injuries were reported. Total damage was estimated between $20,000 and $40,000.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by Ruxer’s and Stork’s wrecker service and the Jasper City Police Department.
