Cletus A. Merkel, 84, of Jasper, died Saturday (February 3) at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper. He was born in Jasper November 28, 1933, to Leo and Anna (Seger) Merkel. He married Mildred C. Blessinger July 28, 1956, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper.

Cletus served in the Indiana Army National Guard. He retired from the Jasper Cabinet Company after 40 years of service and later worked part time for Jasper Rubber Products. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan, especially a Notre Dame football, New York Yankee baseball, and Jasper Wildcat sports fan. He enjoyed bird watching and country and bluegrass music.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred “Millie” Merkel; four daughters, Brenda Dotterweich and husband Bill and Rhonda Collins and husband Mike, all of Jasper, Nanette Seng and husband Tom, Dubois, and Annette Kern and husband Jerry, Schnellville; four sons, Michael Merkel and wife Vicky, Jasper, Kurt Merkel and wife Darlene, Birdseye, Ronald Merkel and wife Wendy, Plano, Texas, and Scott Merkel and wife Becky, Hendersonville, Tennessee; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rosie Preusz, Jasper, and Marie Leistner, Evansville.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one grandson, Nathan Merkel, one sister, Virginia Schroering, and two brothers, Sylvester and Linus Merkel.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church, Holy Trinity Catholic Schools, Jasper Baseball Boosters, or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be shared at A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery.
