Charles E. Knust, 78, Jasper

Charles E. Knust, 78, of Jasper, died Friday (January 19) at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born in Jasper March 15, 1939, to Louis and Leona (Schmitt) Knust. He married Gladys (Schitter) Lechner May 22, 1962, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland.

Charlie worked as a car salesman for Sternberg’s in Jasper. Throughout his life he and his wife owned and operated the Sunset Tavern, Sunset Laundry and Dry Cleaners, and the Pizza Shack. He also worked in land and neighborhood development, buying and selling land and homes. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, Jasper Knights of Columbus, Jasper Moose, Jasper Outdoor Recreation, Kiwanis Club, and the Jasper German Club. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Knust; two daughters, Donn Byers and husband David, Louisville, and Stacy Bromm and companion Bryon Schneider, Jasper; one son, Perry Knust and wife Carolyn, Apex, North Carolina; two grandchildren, grandchildren, Dara Byers and Jenna Bromm; three great-grandchildren, Jakub, Jadelynn, and Jaxon; and one brother, Earl Knust and wife Shirley, Jasper.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Fehribach and one sister who died in infancy, and one brother, Robert Knust.

Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Holy Family Parish members will lead a rosary at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Jasper Moose will host a ritual at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be shared at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Church with burial following in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum.
