Dr. Allen Dearing Scales, 89, Huntingburg

Dr. Allen Dearing Scales, 89, of Huntingburg, died Tuesday (January 16) at The Waters nursing facility in Huntingburg. He was born in Oakland City September 3, 1928, to Dr. Alfred Blythe Scales and Mazo (Dearing) Scales. He married Judith Grabert in 1958. She died in 1980. He married Evelyn Begle in 1982.

Dr. Scales graduated from Oakland City High School and studied pre-medicine at Evansville College (now the University of Evansville). He earned his undergraduate degree in medicine from the University of South Dakota and his medical degree from the University of Illinois in 1954. Following his graduation he began his career as a naval officer and completed his internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. While in the Navy he served as Air Group Flight Surgeon aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown. While in college he obtained his pilot’s license. He became an FAA certified flight surgeon and provided flight physicals for numerous pilots during his medical career. He loved flying and continued to fly until he voluntarily gave it up at the age of 70. Upon completion of his naval duties he moved to Huntingburg and joined his father’s medical practice in 1958. In 1972, he was accepted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians and received his board certification and membership into the American Board of Family Physicians in 1978. He continued to practice medicine in Huntingburg until he relocated to Florida in 1981 and opened a medical practice near Rocklege and continued to practice medicine until his retirement in 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Scales; one daughter, Kimberly Kilinski and husband Larry, Newburgh; one son, Scott Scales and wife Leesa, Evansville; one step-son, Jeff Egler and wife Wanda, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two step-daughters, June Garrison, Huntingburg, and Jayne Egler and husband Darrell, Rockledge, Florida; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and first wife he was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Scales.

Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg. Memorial contributions can be made to The Dubois County Humane Society or The Waters of Huntingburg activity fund. Military rites will be conducted by the VFW Post No. 2366 Memorial Detail at the funeral home.
