Jasper Rotary Club announces Speech Contest.

LOCAL CONTEST & PRIZES Any area high school student is eligible to participate!
Winner will receive a $500 scholarship and advance to district for a chance to win up to $1,000

TOPIC must be leadership, service and the Four Way Test. The Four Way Test must be mentioned in its  in the speech. The Four Way Test sentences may be stated all together or individually. It is recommended you state the Four Way Test verbatium. For example, if you use “true” rather than “truth,” it will be at the
discreƟon of the judges whether to deduct points.

DELIVERY the speech is to be presented without aid of lectern, multimedia or props. However, a 3 x 5 note card with outline of the speech may be used. The note card may not contain the speech word for word. It is an outline only and is subject to review by the judges. The contestant may move around or stay staƟonary during the speech. A microphone may be used, but it must be hands‐free. If such a microphone is desired, the contestant must let the speech contest chairman of this need in
advance of the day of the contest.

LENGTH four to six‐minute speech. The speech Ɵme limits will be strictly enforced with the minimum set at four minutes and the maximum at six minutes. Any speech that falls outside either of these limits will receive a three (3) point deduction. There will be a timekeeper as the contestant presents his/her speech. Warnings for time elapsed will be displayed by colored card.  At 3.5 minutes a green card will be displayed, at 4 minutes a red card will be displayed, and at 6 minutes a black card will be displayed.

CONTENT the speech given by each contestant must be the work of the contestant alone. No more than three (3) quotes may be included in the speech.

OTHER contestants will draw as to the position his/her speech is to be given. The drawing is done upon arrival and sign in at the competition.   The competition will be held in one round. Judges will be chosen by the district chairman and may or may not be Rotarians. Contestants will be judged on content,
organization, and presentation. Rules of competition should be identical to the local competition rules.

Each speech will be judged according to the following: Content
and Organization, Appropriateness (10 points), Interest (15 points), Accuracy (10 points), Sequence of thought (15 points), Presentation/Appearance (5 points), Vocal
quality (5 points), Poise (5 points), Expressiveness (5 points), Persuasiveness (10 points), Originality (10 points), Overall impact (10 points)
