Janice “Jan” Mehne, 70, of Portersville, died Friday (January 12) at St. Vincent’s Hospital at Evansville. She was born in Jasper March 9, 1947, to Mathew and Helen (Wehr) Eckert. She married Gene Mehne January 2, 1993, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Haysville.

Jan was a sales representative and tech support for Cook Urological in Chicago and retired from Sten’s Corporation in Jasper. She also worked as registered x-ray technician for over 18 years for Welborn Baptist Hospital in Evansville. She was a 1965 graduate of Jasper High School and a graduate of St. John Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, served as a Stephen Minister, and volunteered for many years delivering community meals on Thanksgiving Day. She was a member of the St. Anne Society the Psi Iola Xi Sorority and did volunteer work for Crisis Connection.

She is survived by her husband, Gene Mehne; her mother, Helen Eckert, Jasper; one brother, Charles Eckert and wife Gail, Jasper; four sisters, Phyllis Oeding and husband Kenneth, Ferdinand, Carol Toy and husband Mike, Dale, and Gloria Bueltel and husband Charles and Linda Goeppner and husband Frank, all of Jasper; 15 nieces and nephews, and 32 great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Mathew Eckert, and one brother, Edward J. Eckert.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper. A rosary will be prayed at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday by the St. Anne Society at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery.
