Elsie R. Selby, 86, Jasper

Elsie R. Selby, 86, of Jasper, died Thursday (November 30) at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born in Jasper September 3, 1931, to Frank and Theresa (Braunecker) Mehling. She married Melvin Eugene “Gene” Selby Dec. 29, 1953, at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Petersburg. He died June 19, 1991.

Elsie was a graduate of Jasper High School. She worked at Jasper Wood Products before marrying her husband. She opened Ye Ole Meat Shop, a meat market/grocery store, with her brother, Robert “Bobby” Mehling in Petersburg in the mid 1980s. She worked there and at Clements Grocery Store before moving back to Jasper in 1993 where she worked at Big Lots until her retirement in 2010. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper and loved St. Louis Cardinal and Chicago Cub baseball and Indiana University basketball. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, helping others by driving friends to appointments, the grocery store, bingo, and church, and spending time with her daughter’s puppy, Dakota.

She is survived by one daughter, Tina Gross and husband Eric, Jasper; one brother, Ralph Mehling and wife Frieda, Jasper; four grandchildren, Megan Rice and husband Shad, Anthony Wheatley and fiancé Amanda Jesse, Heather Blunk and husband Dylan, and Jordan Wheatley; five great-grandchildren, Carter Wheatley, Shaydan, and Keegan Rice, and Bentley and Breighlee Wheatley; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Mehling.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Church or to a favorite charity. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Church with burial following in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Petersburg.
