Ray Vaal, 77, St. Meinrad

Ray Vaal, 77, of St. Meinrad, died Tuesday (November) at Memorial Hospital in Jasper. He was born in St. Meinrad May 19, 1940, to Robert and Mildred (Gogel) Vaal. He married Janet McNelis June 9, 1962, at Precious Blood Church in Jasper.

Ray was owner of Vaals Appliance Store. He was a member of the St. Meinrad Fire Department since 1958, serving as chief and assistant chief. He served in the National Guard and was a member of St. Meinrad American Legion Post 366. He enjoyed 4-wheeling and restoring his 1947 Jeep.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Vaal; one son, Jeff Vaal and wife Toni, St. Meinrad; one daughter, Schelly Songer and husband John, Jasper; one brother, James Vaal and wife Clara Mae, Ferdinand; seven sisters, Dorothy Gehlhausen, Ruthie Clark and husband Rich and Connie Hildenbrand and husband Randy, all of Ferdinand, Bettye Greulich and husband Leroy, St. Meinrad, Norma Amos, Huntingburg, Kathy Hopf and husband Bill, Jasper, and Toni Mundy, Nicholasville, Kentucky;  three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 1-7 p.m. Friday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at St. Meinrad Church. Online condolences may be shared at www.becherfuneralhome.com. Funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Meinrad Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
