Indianapolis (NNDC) – The fourth time was charm! After missing the football state championship game by a single game three previous times, the Southridge Raiders advanced to the 2017 2A state championship game Saturday with an impressive 24-7 win over Indianapolis Scecina on a rain-soaked Indianapolis Tech football field in Indianapolis. The Raiders will play the Woodlan Warriors next Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium for the 2A state championship. Both teams have 12 and 2 records. Woodlan is in Allen County near Fort Wayne.

It took almost four hours to post the victory Saturday. After Scecina took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter the game was stopped for two hours because of lightning. When play resumed the Raiders scored on a Jeovany Dubon field goal, cutting the Mustangs’ lead to 7-3 at the end of the first period.

Coach Scott Buening’s Raiders took charge in the second quarter. They grabbed the lead, 10-7, on a Jayce Harter to Matt Price touchdown pass and made it 17-7 at halftime thanks to a 42-yard touchdown strike from Harter to Colin Smith.

The Raiders dominated the second half, scoring their last touchdown in the third quarter on a one-yard keeper by Harter while holding their hosts scoreless. The Raider defense was outstanding, the Raiders’ offensive line dominated the Scecina line in the trenches.

The game began at 2 p.m. and the final horn came just a few minutes before 6 because of the 2-hour lightning delay and the Raiders’ ball-control ground game in the second half. A cold rain fell during much of the game, but the Raiders and Raider fans didn’t complain. The play on the field warmed things up considerably.
