Leonard B. Gehlhausen, Sr., 83, Ferdinand

Leonard GehlhausenLeonard B. Gehlhausen, Sr., 83, of Ferdinand, died Wednesday (August 23) at his home. He was born in Dubois May 22, 1934, to Lawrence and Henrietta (Nonte)\ Gehlhausen. He married Linda L. Jones May 3, 1957, in Otwell. She died November 3, 1990. He married Ida M. Sander (Fetter) December 26, 1994, at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church. She died February 28, 2017.

Leonard served in the United States Air Force for 22½ years, serving in Viet-Nam in 1970 and 1971. He retired from Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in 1996 as an electronics technician. He was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church, Ferdinand American Legion Post 124, The Ferdinand VFW, the National Rifle Association, and the North American Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, genealogy, water skiing (in his younger years), and being with his family and friends.

He is survived by two daughters, Jody Kessinger and husband Dale, Evanston, and Christy Beadles, Huntingburg; one son, Leonard B. Gehlhausen Jr. and wife Yvette, Huntingburg; two step-sons, Keith Sander and wife Terra, Lake Helmerich Village, and Lt. Col. Michael Sander and wife Kathy, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia; 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dolores Daugherity, Indianapolis.

In addition to his parents and two wives, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Maurice and Ronald Gehlhausen, and one sister, Pauline Hall.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday and from 7-9:30 a.m. Monday at the Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Online condolences may be shared at www.becherfuneralhome.com. Funeral services at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ferdinand Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Velpen. Military graveside services will be provided by Ferdinand American Legion Post No. 124.
