Clay Street 1 Clay Street 2Jasper (NNDC) – Motorists can no longer turn left from both the southbound and northbound lanes of Clay Street at the intersection of 6th Street in downtown Jasper.

In fact, motorists using Clay can no longer cross 6th in either direction as well.

Tuesday morning, the city put up signs alerting all that only right hand turns are allowed for motorists traveling in both directions on Clay.

The sign is the result of a study involving the Jasper Street Department, the Jasper Police Department and the Jasper Chamber of Commerce.

This summer city councilwoman Nancy Eckerle, who is also a member of the city’s Board of Public Works, voiced her concern to street commissioner Jeff Theising about the number of accidents at the intersection.

Police chief Michael Bennett reported back to both Theising there have been 23 accidents at the intersection in the the last three years…

Sixth Street is one of the two most heavily traveled streets in Jasper.
