Double Fatal Accident Investigation Continues

Jasper (NNDC) – Indiana State Police at Jasper are continuing their investigation into Saturday’s double-fatal accident near Ireland.

Sgt. Phil Hensley with ISP says a scooter with two people stopped along Indiana 56 when it was struck by a pickup truck; killing both.

The two killed were 26-year old James Posey and his passenger 25-year-old Ashley Stephens.  Both were from Jasper.

The accident happened at about 9:30pm Saturday just west of North 600 West west of Ireland.

Hensley says there was a cap or hat in the roadway at the accident scene.  He says neither Posey or Stephens were wearing helmets so the cap or hat may have been Posey’s which could be the reason the two were stopped on the highway to retrieve it.

Indiana State Police, they were struck by a 1995 Dodge Ram truck driven by 27-year-old Benjamin Braunecker of Jasper.

Hensley says the driver of the pickup truck, 27-year Benjamin Braunecker of Jasper did not see the stopped scooter in time to avoid the collision.

ISP accident reconstructionists believe the truck dragged the moped almost 200 feet before coming to a stop.

ISP says one of the victims was thrown from the scooter: the other was pinned under the truck.

Posey was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Dubois County Coroner’s Office.  Stephens was transported to Memorial Hospital in Jasper where  she died shortly after arriving.
