Jasper (NNDC) – Before it all comes tumbling down, the Jasper Library Board says it wants to know if there are any interested parties for one section of the former Hoosier Desk building.

The library board and the Jasper Arts Commission are teaming up together to build a new cultural arts center for the city at the building’s location at 3rd Avenue and Mill Street.

Jasper’ library director Christine Golden says the old office furniture factory’s 3,000 sq. ft. boiler building could remain if a new owner or tenant would want it… (CLICK TO LISTEN)

Golden says the building would be ideal for a new restaurant or other type of business.  She says once final plans for the new cultural center are approved and construction begins, the boiler building would then have be brought down as well… (CLICK TO LISTEN)

Jasper Arts Commission President Michael Jones says he has always hoped that a section of the former factory could be saved and repurposed.

A public referendum was approved by local voters last fall for the Library’s half of the projected $13 million price tag.  The Arts Commission’s half is pending final approval from the Jasper City Council.

A start of construction date for the new Jasper Cultural Center has not yet been announced.  Golden says she hopes deconstruction of the deconstruction of the Hoosier Desk building can begin by year’s end.
