Evansville (NNDC) – The Diocese of Evansville held a Thanksgiving Mass on Thursday at St. Benedict’s Cathedral in Evansville Thursday evening to honor and thank now Archbishop Charles Thompson for his service as Bishop of Evansville the past six years.

Pope Francis appointed Thompson as Archbishop of Indianapolis earlier this year.

Thompson was ordained and installed as Bishop of Evansville on June 29, 2011. He will continue to serve as an administrator of the Diocese of Evansville until his July 28th installation as Archbishop in Indianapolis.

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis comprises 13,758 square miles and it has total population of 2,621,455 people of which 223,815 (9%) are Catholic.

The Diocese of Evansville (including the Catholic parishes of Dubois County) are in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

A frequent visitor to Dubois County during his time as Bishop, Thompson said Mass and dedicated the new statue of St. Mother Theodore Guerin on March 18th at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

The statue was in honor of the 175th anniversary of when St. Mother Theodore’s founding of the Sisters of Providence’s first mission school in Jasper near where the statue now stands.
