Two Vehicles Totaled; One Injured In Maltersville Chain-Reaction Accident

Maltersville (NNDC) – A Tuesday morning four-vehicle, chain-reaction accident resulted in two of the vehicles being totaled and shutting down the highway for a short time.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says the accident happened shortly after 6:00am.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says a car driven by 49-year old Osmaro Ramos was traveling south on Indiana 162 just north of East 350 South when he came upon three other slowing southbound vehicles shortly after 6:00am.

Ramos told DCSD deputies the vehicles in front of him were coming to a stop very quickly and that he could not stop his car in time in the southbound lane, nor could he veer into the northbound lane to avoid a collision because of oncoming traffic.

DCSD says Ramos’ car rear-ended a car driven by 25-year old Cody Staup of Jasper.  DCSD says that collision caused Straup’s car to collided with a third car driven by 29-year old Andrew Young of Jasper.  DCSD says Young’s car then rear-ended a fourth southbound vehicle, a pickup truck driven by 33-year old Michael Christmas of Jasper, which was in the process of turning onto 350 South at the time of the collision.

Ramos complained of pain to his chest after the accident.  He was ticketed for following too closely causing the accident which closed the highway for about 20 minutes.  Ramos declined to be transported by ambulance from the scene.

DCSD says Ramos and Straup cars were totaled.  Damage to Young’s car was estimated at $1,400. DCSD says Christmas’ truck was not damaged.
