Jasper (NNDC) – The Jasper Wildcats girls tennis team earned the school’s 10th trip to the IHSAA state finals Saturday with a 4-1 win over rival Evansville Memorial in a one-match semistate contest.   This will be the Lady Wildcats third consecutive trip to the finals.

Jasper’s only individual match loss Saturday at the semistate was at #1 Singles where junior Sarah Monesmith lost to the Tigers’ highly-touted Makenzie Myers, (1-6, 1-6).  With the win, Myers individual match record improves to 20-3.

Jasper won the other four matches with Suchi Bandaru (#2 Singles), Mallory Ahlbrand (#3 Singles), Caroline Theil & Olivia Yarbrough (#1 Doubles) and Kathleen Messmer & Jillian Seger (#2 Doubles) all winning easily in straight sets.

Jasper will play in the quarterfinals of the 2017 IHSAA State Finals beginning at 3pm at Carmel.

Jasper made previous state final appearances in 1982, 1992, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2015, and 2016.  Last year, the Wildcats lost in the semifinals to eventual state runner-up South Bend St. Joseph (1-4).   Indianapolis Cathedral won the state championship a year ago led by the sister act of sophomore Maeve Koscielski (28-0) at No. 1 singles, senior Grace Koscielski (27-0) at No. 2 singles and freshman Claire Koscielski (28-0) at No. 3 singles.  Each remained undefeated for the season.

The Wildcats have never won the state championship in girls tennis, but have finished as state runners-up in 1992, 2002 and 2003.
