Henry “Hank” Backer, 87, Ferdinand

Henry “Hank” Backer, 87, of Ferdinand, died Wednesday (May 24) at his home. He was born in Ferdinand May 3, 1930, to Dr. Henry G. and Frances (McLaughlin) Backer.

Hank earned a Master’s Degree at Indiana State University and was a retired math teacher at Cannelton High School. He was a Korean Conflict U.S. Army veteran and served in the 116th Combat Engineering Branch. He was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand, Ferdinand American Legion Post 124, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed reading, hunting, playing cards, and playing tennis.

He is survived by three sisters, Sr. Phyllis Backer, MMS, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mary Jo Uebelhor, Jasper, and Margaret “Margie” Backer, Ferdinand; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Backer, Jasper, and Selma Backer, St. Meinrad; three brothers, Dr. George “Pete” Backer and wife Dr. Barbara Backer, LaPorte, In., Dr. Thomas Backer and wife Pamela, Erlanger, Kentucky, and Dr. Joseph Backer and wife Lucia, McLean Virginia; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Susan Hasenour, and four brothers, Dave, Pat, John and Larry Backer.

Friends may call from 8-10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ferdinand Church. Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.becherfuneralhome.com. Funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ferdinand Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites will be provided by Ferdinand Legion Post 124.
