Ernest “Gene” Baxter, 83, Jasper

Gene BaxterErnest “Gene” Baxter, 83, of Jasper, died Wednesday (May 24) at the Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. He was born in Rutherford Township, Indiana, October 18, 1933, to Ernest R. and Ethel L. (Parsons) Baxter.

Gene was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a farmer and a bus driver for Loogootee schools.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Baxter; three stepdaughters, Wanda Uebelhor, and husband, Rick, Jasper, Diana Klingle-Wilson and husband, Ken, Indianapolis, and Kim Doty and husband John, French Lick; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two half-brothers, Ken Frye and wife Sharon, Loogootee, and Jerry Frye, and wife Eliane, LaQuinta, California; one half-sister Judy Purcell and husband Glenn, Edwardsburg, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one half brother, Marlon Frye.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to Northwood Retirement Community or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be shared at Funeral services at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with burial following at a later date. Rev. John Simmons will officiate. VFW Post No. 673 will conduct military rites at the funeral home.
