John Garriety “Jack” Bies, D.D.S., 85, Jasper

Doc BiesJohn Garriety “Jack” Bies, D.D.S., 85, of Jasper, died Saturday (May 20) at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. He was born in Montgomery July 12, 1931, to Garriety and Leona (Butcher) Bies. He married Lucille Caroline Gutgsell February 7, 1953, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper. She died January 6, 2017.

Jack grew up in Washington, Indiana, and attended Xavier University, where he played baseball. He left Xavier and joined the United States Navy, serving as a radiology technician in the port of Norfolk, Virginia. After service he returned to Indiana University for dental training and then moved to Jasper, his wife’s hometown.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper where he volunteered for perpetual adoration. He enjoyed golf, loved dogs, and adored baseball, coaching numerous Pony and Little League teams. For many years he tended a backyard garden, raised roses, and enjoyed debating politics with his friends.

He is survived by three sons, John Bies, Evansville, and Doug Bies and wife Cindi and Kurt Bies, all of Jasper; two daughters, Christine Curtis and husband Todd, Woodstock, Illinois, and Angela Bies and husband Toby Egan, Potomac, Maryland; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Lee Fox.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church or to the Good Samaritan Society – Northwood Retirement Community. Online condolences may be made at A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church with entombment in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date. American Legion Post No. 147 will conduct military rites.
