Leroy J. Schnaus, 95, Ireland

Leroy SchnausLeroy J. Schnaus, 95, of Ireland, died Sunday (May 15) at his home. He was born in Ireland September 11, 1921, to Albert and Cecelia (Dick) Schnaus. He married Dorothy M. Mehringer October 19, 1946, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.

Leroy was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, the Ireland Historical Society, a charter and 70 year member of the Ireland Knights of Columbus, a charter member of the Ireland Sportsman Club, and an original and 30 year member of the Ireland Utilities Board. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the Jasper Wildcats, Chicago Cubs, and Indiana University basketball. He also enjoyed playing golf and cards, especially Sheepshead.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy M. Schnaus; one daughter, Linda Erny and husband, Dave, Jasper; three sons, Ken Schnaus and wife Marilyn and Kevin Schnaus and wife Mary, all of Jasper, and Steve Schnaus, Loogootee; son-in-law, Glen Werne, Jasper; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Martha Stenftenagel and husband, Joe, Jasper, Anna Burger, Jasper, and Betty Shelly, Greenwood.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn Werne, one daughter-in-law, Gerri Schnaus, and six brothers, Sylvester, Virgil, Robert, Albert Jr., Edward, and Larry Schnaus.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The Ireland K of C will have a memorial service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church, the American Heart Association, or to the wishes of the family. Condolences may be made at www.becherkluesner.com. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
