Out With The Old; Awaiting The New Astra Signs (PHOTOS)

Jasper (NNDC) – Sign crews from Newburgh Monday removed the old neon marquee signs at the now under renovation Astra Theater.

The signs will be cleaned, painted and refurbished by Custom Sign & Engineering.

The more than 80-year old Astra, now owned by the local non-profit group Next Act, Inc., is in the early stages of a more than $750,000 renovation that will turn the old movie house into what Next Act officials call a multi-purpose cultural venue

The curved theater front, which is actually not the theater’s original facade, will be replaced with a more historically appropriate version according to Next Act president Marc Stecyk.

Steczyk says, “We couldn’t be more thrilled about what this does for the Astra!”

This is the first ‘sign’ the public can see that the renovation is officially underway.
