Roberta C. McGovren, 99, of Jasper, died Wednesday (April 19) at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. She was born in Jasper June 19, 1917, to Robert J. and Josephine (Schmitt) Fuhs. She married Joseph J. McGovren June 7, 1941, at St. Joseph
Catholic Church in Jasper. He died May 23, 2000.
Roberta operated Roberta’s Beauty Shop before her marriage. She was a licensed
insurance agent and worked at R. J. Fuhs Agency for more than 50 years before retiring at the age of 96. She was a member of St. Joseph Church and its St. Anne’s Society, the Jasper Circle of the Daughters of Isabella, the American Legion Post 147 Auxiliary, and the VFW Post 673 Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, enjoyed watching Indiana University basketball, and doing word search puzzles. She was previously active in the Dubois County Mental Health Association and was an excellent seamstress. Roberta and her husband were Friends of Bill W and touched many lives through their involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. They attended AA conventions all across the United States.
She is survived by two sons, Jim McGovren and wife Linda and John McGovren and wife Susan, all of Jasper; one grandson, Matt McGovren and wife Kelly, New York City; and one granddaughter, Shea Fleck and husband Brad, Indianapolis.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son, Michael McGovren, and one daughter, Maureen McGovren.
Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church or to a favorite charity. A Celebration of Life Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with burial following at a later date in Fairview Cemtery.
