Martina B. Thewes, 94, Celestine

Martina ThewesMartina B. Thewes, 94, of Celestine, died Tuesday (March 28) at Brookside Village in Jasper. She was born in Jasper July 3, 1922, to John and Mary (Seger) Werner. She married Alois H. Thewes June 17, 1941, at St Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. He died May 25, 2011.

Martina was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Isadore Parish – St. Celestine Campus, the St. Anne’s Ladies Sodality, and the Celestine Community Club. She retired from Aristokraft in Jasper where she worked for 20 years. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, and playing cards.

She is survived by five daughters, Janice Knies and husband Dave, Kathy Vogler and husband Tony, and Cheryl Haas and husband Kevin, all of Jasper, Mary Rohleder and husband Steve, Bretzville, and Karen Mehringer and husband Tony, Schnellville; six sons, Larry Thewes and wife Marilyn, Allen Thewes, Randy Thewes and wife Connie, and Kevin Thewes, all of Celestine, Jim Thewes and wife Connie, Jasper, and Leon Thewes and wife Donna, St Anthony; son-in-law Tom Fickas, Sr., Colorado Springs, Colorado; 32 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Annetta Mehling, Ferdinand.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Thewes, one daughter, Doris Fickas, three brothers, Roman, Joseph, and Walter Werner, and two infant sisters.

Friends may call from noon-6 p.m. Sunday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. A rosary will be prayed at 11:45 a.m. Sunday by the St. Anne’s Ladies Sodality. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Isadore Parish or to a favorite charity. Funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Celestine Catholic Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
