UPDATE: The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says 83-year old Morris Weidenbenner of Ireland was the man who was killed when he was struck by passing pickup truck while crossing Indiana 56 Tuesday afternoon near his home.

Hill was transported to Memorial Hospital after the accident for a blood draw.  Hill was not charged.

In a news release, DCSD thanked all agencies that assisted with the accident’s investigation Tuesday, including the Madison Township (Ireland) Fire Department, Memorial Hospital EMTs, and Uebelhor & Sons wrecker service.

The department also expresses its sympathies to all involved in this ‘tragic accident.’

Ireland (NNDC) – An Ireland man was killed this afternoon when he was struck by a passing pickup truck near his home along Indiana 56 west of Ireland…

The man, whose name has not yet been released pending formal notification of family, is believed to have been struck by the westbound truck while he was getting his mail near the ‘T’ section with North 550 West (the Ireland Sportsmens Club road).

DCSD says first responders on the scene including an off-duty DCSD deputy found the deceased man laying in the roadway.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says at this time there appears to be no fault in what DCSD says is a ‘tragic accident.’

DCSD says after talking with witnesses and the driver of the pickup at the scene, it appears the man who was killed was crossing the roadway at the time which was approximately 2:52pm.

The driver of the pickup involved told DCSD that he did see the man and attempted to miss him, but could not.

DCSD says more information will be released Wednesday morning after all family of the deceased man have been notified.  DCSD is asking the public to use discretion at this time regarding the man’s family including discussions via social media.
