James A. Mathers, 84, French Lick

James MathersJames A. Mathers, 84, of French Lick, died Thursday (March 2) at Springs Valley Meadows in French Lick. He was born in Crawford County July 12, 1932, to Jesse F. Mathers and Nella (Gott) Mathers.

James retired from Jasper Corporation where he was a tool grinder for 31 years. He was owner of Springs Valley Wood Products in French Lick. He was a 1952 graduate of French Lick High School. He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers and served his country during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Lib) Ann Hollan Mathers, whom he married June 28, 1986, and the mother of his children, Lucinda Boyer Taber, whom he married June 16, 1957. He is also survived by twin sons, Paul Mathers and wife Rita, French Lick, and David Mathers and wife Margaret, Orleans; one daughter, JoAn Matthew, Campbellsburg; one sister, Lois Moffatt and husband Raymond, Hillham; three step-children, Nancy East and husband Steve, Sharpsville, and Karen Pittman and husband Doug, and Larry Hollan, all of Paoli; 11 grandchildren, Matt Mathers and wife April, and Seth and Megan Mathers, all of French Lick, Tyler Matthew, New Albany, Sara Durbin and husband Phillip, Paoli, Victoria and Vanessa Hickman, both of Jasper, Ashlynn and Alison Matthew, both of Campbellsburg, and Callie and Lauren Mathers, both of Orleans; three great-grandchildren, Nova and Kaylie Mathers, French Lick, and Cohen Begle, Jasper; six step grandchildren; and nine step great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 4-8:30 p.m. Friday at the Brosmer-Kemple Chapel and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Red Quarry Christian Church in French Lick. A funeral ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Red Quarry followed by burial in Harned Chapel Cemetery in Bacon.
