Esther C. Gutgsell, 97, Jasper

Esther GutgsellEsther C. Gutgsell, 97, of Jasper, died Monday (February 27) at Brookside Village in Jasper. She was born in Ireland May 8, 1919, to Max and Elizabeth (Schuetter) Renner. She married Victor A. Gutgsell December 9, 1944, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland. He died June 19, 1994.

Esther was a lifetime homemaker and worked at Jasper Glove Factory for 10 years. She was a charter member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the VFW Post No. 673 Auxiliary. She and her family were recipients of the Holy Family School Distinguished Family Award. She was an avid quilter and enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, music, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by three daughters, Janis Seger and husband Gene, Huntingburg, Karen Primus and husband William, Vincennes, and Lisa Birge and husband John, Jasper; four sons, Tom Gutgsell and wife Shelley, Daniel Gutgsell and Kathy, Russell Gutgsell and companion Brenda Strohmeyer, and John Gutgsell and wife Julie, all of Jasper; 15 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one step great-granddaughter, two sisters, Ruth Vonderschmitt, Jasper, and Wilma Jean Begle and husband Otto, Ferdinand; and sister-in-law, Rose Merkley, Huntingburg.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three sisters, Rita Lampert, Valeria Bellner, and Beatrice Schroeder, and one brother, Albert Renner.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The Ladies of the Blessed Virgin Sodality will pray a rosary at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Church or to a favorite charity. Condolences may be made at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Church with entombment to follow in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum.
