Lester F. Merder, 97, Jasper

Lester MerderLester F. Merder, 97, of Jasper, died Tueday (February 22) at Brookside Village in Jasper. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, January 28, 1920, to Henry and Clara  (Blessinger) Merder. He married Caroline Wilz April 25, 1940, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper. She died December 17, 2014.

Lester was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World Warl II. He retired from Jasper Novelty, where he worked for 40 years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, the Holy Name Society, American Legion Post No. 147, the Jasper Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th degree knight, and a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 673. He was an avid sports fan, and especially loved Indiana University basketball games and all Jasper sports.

He is survived by one daughter, Ruth Flick and husband Tom, Jasper; two sons, Rich Merder and wife Gloria, Jasper, and Bob Merder and wife Kathy, McKinney, Texas; daughter-in-law Jane Merder, Jasper; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one son, Ron Merder.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church, the Memorial Hospital Foundation, or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be made at www.becherkluesner.com. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. VFW Post No. 673 will conduct military graveside rights.
