Huntingburg Man Facing Felony Charges After Striking Police



Jasper (NNDC) – A Huntingburg man is facing felony charges after police say he punched police officers Saturday night at the southside McDonald’s restaurant.

Jasper police officers were called to the restaurant along south U. S. 231 at about 10:30pm after receiving a report about an intoxicated man.

JPD officers made contact with 40-year-old Johnathon Franzell.

JPD says Franzell immediately became confrontational and cursing and yelling at the officers while inside the restaurant.

JPD says officers also noted Franzell appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic.  Officers on location say he was lethargic and slurring his speech

After being asked several times to stop yelling and step outside the restaurant, officers say Franzell became combative and resisted arrested when officers tried to physically take him in to custody.

JPD says Franzell punched several officers.  One officer used a Taser gun to subdue Franzell.

JPD says after Franzell was taken into custody, officers found a hypodermic needle in a pocket.

JPD also says while being placed into a squad carFranzell allegedly made several threatening comments toward one of the officers

After he was medically cleared at Memorial Hospital, police charge Franzell with a Level 5 felony count of battery on a public safety official with injury, and Level 6 felony counts of illegal possession of a hypodermic needle and intimidation,.

He also faces misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and public intoxication.

According to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department, Franzell has been arrested 16 times since 1998.
