Toyota Announces Gibson County Plant Expansion; To Add 400 Jobs

Ft. Branch (WTVW/WEHT) – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana officials announced the investment of 600 million dollars into the Gibson County plant, and adding 400 jobs in the process.

Officials said with Tuesday’s announcement, the plant’s workforce will approach 6,000.

Governor Eric Holcomb, sworn into office January 9th, couldn’t help but be impressed.

“I’m just so proud of Gibson county, and Vanderburgh county, Knox county, the whole surrounding area, this region, for making sure that Toyota can grow right here in Indiana,” Holcomb said.

The large investment will help what Toyota officials say is a big demand for the Highlander SUV.

Toyota officials said they can’t build Highlanders fast enough, even after an upswing of production last year.

“We have not been able to keep up with the demand, and so adding this additional capacity of 40,000 additional Highlanders in a 600 million dollar investment is just a great testament to all the hardworking team members that come in here every day and build high quality products,” Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana President Millie Marshall said.

As far as who’ll be taking the jobs, it could be you.

“Anybody is a good candidate, so long as you have good communication skills, good problem-solving skills, your attendance is good,” Marshall said.

“We need to make sure our work force is trained for the jobs of the future, just like Toyota is underscoring today. We need to make sure that our workforce is educated appropriately for the jobs of the 21st century,” Holcomb said.

Part of that changing landscape is changing technology. Toyota officials said that’s where most of the money is going, along with a little going to improve infrastructure.

Production of the new Highlanders will begin in the fall of 2019. A Toyota representative tells Eyewitness News that there are current job openings at the Gibson County Plant and the bulk of applications for the 400 new jobs will likely begin in early 2019.
