Ireland (NNDC) – A water main break south of Ireland has prompted a boil order for Ireland Utilities customers.

Martha Keusch with the utilities office says the break occurred between on North 500 West (south of Ireland Elementary School) just north of West 150 North.

Ireland Utilities customers are being asked for residents in that area (see map) to boil their water for at least five minutes if its been used for drinking or cooking.

No word yet on what caused the main break or how long the boil order will be in effect.

After the repair is made, two lab tests will need to be done to make sure the water is safe to used.

Allen Mendel, a lab tech with the Jasper Water Utility says he anticipates conducting one of the needed tests this (Friday) afternoon, and another one Saturday afternoon.  He says two water samples must test positive for drinking and the samples must be taken from the Ireland water supply 24 hours apart before the boil order can be lifted. Mendel says he will conduct the tests over the weekend if need to be to get the order lifted as quickly as possible.
