Virgil R. Lechner, 82, Jasper

Virgil LechnerVirgil R. Lechner, 82, of Jasper, died Thursday (January 19) at Cathedral Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in Jasper December 14, 1934, to Henry and Philomenia (Gramelspacher) Lechner. He married JoAnn Durcholz December 27, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland.

Virgil was a real estate developer and developed the Lechner subdivision in Jasper. He also worked as a self-employed carpet layer and farmer. He was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church in Jasper and enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, and going to yard sales and auctions.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Lechner; one daughter, Jane Weidenbenner, Cartersville, Georgia; four sons, Terry Lechner and wife Sherri, Joe Lechner, and Mike Lechner and wife Brenda, all of Jasper, and John Lechner and wife Mary Lou, Huntingburg; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Jim Lechner, six sisters, Cordella Hopf, Florence Hurst, Eleanor Gogel, Rosetta Keusch, Marcella “Sally” Heim, and Ruth Schmitt, and one brother, Vincent Lechner.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Monday at Precious Blood Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Precious Blood Catholic Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be made at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Precious Church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery.
