Alvin Niehaus

Alvin John Niehaus, 98, of Saint Meinrad, died Saturday (January 14) at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. He was born in Siberia July 6, 1918, to Frank and Mary Elizabeth (Brockman) Niehaus. He married Frances Rasche August 9, 1947, at St. Ferdinand Church. She died June 8, 1993.

Alvin was a member of St. Meinrad Catholic Church. He enjoyed cooking and wood working, was a retired mechanic, served in World War II and was a recipient of the Bronze Star.

He is survived by four sons, Ron Niehaus and wife Patti, New Jersey, Dennis Niehaus and wife Martha, Bretzville, and Tim and Rich Niehaus, both of Saint Meinrad; two daughters, Patty Grant and husband Steve, Peoria, Illinois, and Jane Hellmann and husband Pat, Alexandria; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by six brothers, Raymond, Amil, Sylvester, Louis, Arthur, and Pete Niehaus; four sisters Helen, Marie, Ester, and Sally, and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 1-7 p.m. (CDT) Tuesday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Meinrad Church. Online condolences may be shared at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Meinrad Church with burial following in the church cemetery. St. Meinrad Legion Post 366 will conduct military graveside rights.
