Enrollment Opens For First Jasper Citizens Academy

Jasper (Local Sources) – Enrollment is now underway for the City of Jasper’s first Citizens Academy class.

Jasper Mayor Terry Seitz says the Citizens Academy is open to anyone high school age or older and will meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday evening of the month from February through May.

“The idea for a Jasper Citizens Academy came from tours of the departments the city provided to all council members in 2016 because the majority of them were newly elected officials,” Seitz explained. “Questions at public meetings and social media posts often indicate that more knowledge of local government is needed.”

Participants in the 2017 Jasper Citizens Academy will hold classes at City Hall, Jasper Arts Center, Jasper Wastewater Facility, Jasper Gas & Water Treatment Facility, Habig Center, Jasper Street Department, Jasper Police Department and Jasper Volunteer Fire Department Kiefer Fire Station.

Presentations will be conducted by various City department leaders and will include facility tours and activities.

At least 10 students are needed for the academy to launch; enrollment will be capped at 20. The sessions will last about 2 hours each and there is no charge.
