Row Nellie! (VIDEO)

Jasper (NNDC) – Over the last two weeks, five Jasper High School student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their athletic careers in college.

They include Cale Kilian and Tara Cassidy who are both going to run cross country and track & field at Indiana State.

Evan Aders is going to play baseball at the University of Evansville and Carson Pierce and Reese Kleinhelter are both headed for the University of Southern Indiana… Reece will play baseball for the Screamin’ Eagles; Carson will join the USI mens golf team.

Now you can add another former Wildcat tothe list! But this JHS student-athlete didn’t punt, pass, shoot or kick her way to college…

Jasper High School senior Nellie Mowat Monday signed an NCAA Athletic National Lettter of Intent with Indiana University.

Her sport… women’s rowing!

JHS does not have a rowing team. There is only one high school in Indiana with one; and there’s only one club rowing team… both are in northern Indiana.

It was Nellie’s older sister, a student at IU who suggested she tryout for the Hoosiers women’s team…(NELLIE ON CAMERA talking about how she went to a team information meeting last march and attended an IU rowing camp in June. ¬†She says the coaches told her they thought she had what it takes to be an intercollegiate rower!)

Intercollegiate rowing is not something new for the Mowat family. Nellie’s dad was on the men’s team at Yale University back in the late 70’s.

Now Nellie played golf her freshman year only at Jasper, but was a member of JHS’s marching band all four years which she says will serve her well as a member of the IU rowing team…(NELLIE on camera says being in band taught how to march in unison… keeping a beat and proper rhythm and how to be a good teammate all important things in rowing.)

A direct admit to it’s Media School, Nellie has also been invited to be a member of the Hutton Honors College at IU.
