Melvin W. Leistner, 83, Dubois

mel-leistnerMelvin W. Leistner, 83, of Dubois, died Saturday (November 12) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in Dubois March 14, 1933, to Conrad J. and Caroline (Braun) Leistner. He married Margaret Ann Sendelweck April 24, 1956, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Haysville.

Melvin was a 1951 graduate of Dubois High School. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, from 1953-1955, in the 3rd Armored Tank Division. He was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. and Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska He was owner/operator of Melvin Leistner Trucking from 1979 to 2001. Following retirement he ran a starter and alternator repair service from his home. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Dubois amd was chairman of the Columbia Township Advisory Board for 30 years, from 1986-2016. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and friends and was an avid Indiana University basketball and St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Leistner; two daughters, Gail Leistner and Karen Lechner and husband Tim, all of Jasper; one son, Keith Leistner and wife Chrisy, Whiteland; four grandchildren, Eric and Kaitlyn Lechner, and Jacob and Joseph Leistner; one great-granddaughter, Kylie Fleck; and one sister-in-law, Marie Leistner, Evansville.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Patricia Leistner, and one brother, Gerald Leistner.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Church. Online contributions at Funeral services at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ with burial following in the church cemetery. Pastor John Sterrett will officiate.
