Siberia, Perry County (NNDC) – Three area fire departments, including two from Dubois County battled a small forest fire south of Birdseye Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters from Schnellville, Birdseye and Anderson Township in Perry County were called to a fire on remote state land off Calhoun Road north of Siberia in Perry County west of Indiana 145 .

Schnellville Fire Chief Mark Fischer says hunters in the area reported the fire in the woods shortly before 3:00PM EST that was on restricted access Department of Natural Resources land.

The fire’s location and unimproved roads called fire lanes that are gated and locked made it difficult for firefighters from Schnellville and Birdseye to get to it according to Fischer.

Anderson Township firefighters were the first to the scene as they were able to access it from the south. .  An ATV from the Birdseye Department was used to get assist firefighters in getting to the base of the fire which was in a valley of the rolling remote terrain.

The fire burned approximately 3-5 acres.  The chief says it appears to have started near a deer stand.

Fischer wants to remind all residents that there is a burn ban in effect in Dubois County.  There is also a burn ban in Spencer County.

Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours Sunday afternoon.

A rekindle at about 8:00PM resulted in firefighters being called back to the scene for an additional hour-and-a-half according to Fischer.
