Helen F. Zehr, 91, Dubois

helen-zehrHelen F. Zehr, 91, of Dubois, died Sunday (October 30) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. She was born in St. Paul January 22, 1925, to John and Freada (Friday) Chambers. Her first marriage was to William E. Dodd. He died December 25, 1944 in Germany during combat in WWII. Her second marriage was to Andrew Zehr. He died January 3, 1968.

Helen was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Dubois. She enjoyed flowers, playing bingo, gardening, spending time with family, and being the honorary “Mayor of Skeeterville.”

She is survived by five daughters, Barbara Corn, Clarksville, Sandra Haynes, Arkansas, Lila Kempf and husband Allen “Rock,” Haysville, and Diane Carie and husband Terry and Lisa Merkley and husband Kenny, all of Dubois; four sons, William Dodd, Huntingburg, Jake Zehr and wife Sherry, Dubois, Doyle Zehr, Arkansas, and Ronald Zehr and wife Rachel, Missouri; 45 grandchildren; 81 great-grandchildren, 34 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Rasche, Dubois, and three brothers, Carl Chambers, St. Paul, John Chambers, Indianapolis, and Franklin Chambers and wife Marilyn, Waldron.

In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by three sons, Richard and John Dodd, and Steve Zehr, one grandson, Tyler Dodd, one infant great-granddaughter, and one sister, Margaret McMillian.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper and from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Church or to a favorite charity. Funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery. Rev. John Sterrett will officiate.
