Dennis J. Altman, 86, Ferdinand

dennis-altmanDennis J. Altman, 86, of Ferdinand, died Wednesday (October 5) at Scenic hills Care Center in Ferdinand. He was born in Ferdinand August 27, 1930, to Renus and Mathilda (Mullis) Altman. He married Rita Oeding April 26, 1958, at St. Ferdinand Church.

Dennis was a custodian at Forest Park High School for many years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124. He was a outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and turtling. He known for his preparation of meals for his friends and family at the German Ridge cabin and was a talented clock builder. He loved spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Rita Altman; two sons, Gary Altman and wife Cathy and Sam Altman and wife Trudy, all of Ferdinand; three daughters, Julie Ubelhor and husband Doug, Bristow, and Lynn Lange and husband Joey and Kym Altman, all of Ferdinand; three sisters, Norine “Inci” Hufnagel, Ferdinand, Aline Satkamp, Dale, and Mary Ann “Mitzie” Sliwa, Evansville; nine grandchildren, Wade and Craig “Blu” Pierce, Lori Sitzman, Leah Rasche, Alex, Erin, and Shelby Altman, and Alexa and Tori Lange; Altman; and seven great-grandchildren, Gavin and Ethan Pierce, Myah, Maddie, and Maylee Pierce, and Kylie and Clay Sitzman.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, brother, Robert Altman, and one sister in childhood, Anna Mae Altman.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday and from 7-9:30 a.m. Saturday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dubois County Community Foundation or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be shared at www.becherfuneralhome.com. Funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church with burial following in the church cemetery. American Legion Post 124 will conduct military graveside rights.
