Mildred D. “Millie” Schum, 89, Jasper

Millie SchumMildred D. “Millie” Schum, 89, of Jasper, died Saturday (August 27) at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born in Orange County August 2, 1927, to Waldo and Hazel (Weaver) Crowder. She married Robert Neukam August 6, 1944. He died November 22, 1969. She married John Schum December 8, 1973. He died September 9, 1988.

Millie retired from Wal-Mart in 1990 and for the last 25 years acted as manager and tour guide of Dr. Ted’s Musical Marvels. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland. She was a past member of the Ferdinand Daughters of Isabella and a member of Women of the Moose Chapter No. 648. She collected teddy bears and made sock monkeys.

She is survived by six daughters, Margaret Melton and husband Joe, Jasper, Delphine Neukam and Judy Wagner, both of Indianapolis; Linda Garnas and husband Donald, Roseville, California, Donna Powell and husband Kenny, Hillham, and Cathy Leistner and husband Jim, Dubois; one son, Nicholas Neukam, Muncie; one step-daughter, Mary Kay Waflart and husband Ted, Huntingburg; one step-son, David Schum and wife Ceil, Cedarburg, Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; one step brother, Mark Schuyler, Kendallville; and extended family Gary and Linda Rasche and Ken and Jan Rasche, all of Jasper; and Bill and Becky Rasche, Huntingburg.

In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by one sister, Frieda Crowder, two step-mothers, Gladys and Annabell Crowder, and her companion, Sylvester B. Rasche.

Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Church in Ireland. Memorial contributions may be made to Palliative Care of Memorial Hospital or to a favorite charity. On line condolences may be made at Funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Church with burial following at a later date.
