Irene M. Bettag, 94, St. Meinrad

Irene BettagIrene M. Bettag, 94, of Saint Meinrad, died Monday (August 8) at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. She was born in Mariah Hill October 26, 1921, to Gilbert and Frances (Bockting) Gogel. She married Alvin Bettag October 23, 1945, in Mary Help of Christians Church in Mariah Hill. He died April 8, 1981.

Irene was a homemaker, a member of St. Meinrad Catholic Church and its Ladies Sodality, the Oblates of St. Benedict, and St. Meinrad Senior Citizens. She enjoyed quilting, baking (especially cookies), and being with family, friends, and her grandchildren.

She is survived by five sons, Daniel Bettag and wife Mary Ann, Ferdinand, Ronald Bettag and wife Diane, Chicago, Anthony Bettag and wife Annie, St. Peters, Missouri, William Bettag, Denver, Colordo, and Gerald Bettag and wife Beth, Terre Haute; one daughter, Joan Caldemeyer and husband Chuck, Chandler; fourteen grandchildren; one step-grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; one sister, Romilda Westenhofer. Louisville; and one brother, Andrew “Jack” Gogel and wife Philomena, Mariah Hill.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son Eugene Bettag, one daughter-in-law, Marianne Bettag, one sister, Catherine Rasche, and five brothers, Tom, Fred, Bernard, Leo, and James Gogel.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday and from 7-9:30 a.m. Friday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Online condolences at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Meinrad Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
