Jasper (NNDC) – A Jasper man is charged with two felony counts of theft after he allegedly embezzled about $33,000 from a local union.

The Dubois County Prosecutor’s office spokesperson Beth Sermersheim confirms to NewsNow Dubois County that 56-year old Carlton Woodcox was arrested Friday afternoon for felony theft culminating a U. S. Department of Labor investigation.

Sermersheim says Woodcox served as the secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Government Employees Local between 2006 last June.

That investigation alleges Woodcox exerted unauthorized control over nearly $31,000 of the union’s cash between January 1, 2011 and March 24, 2014 . The probable cause affidavit also alleges he exerted unauthorized control over about $2,000 of the union’s funds between July 1, 2014 and June 24, 2015.

According to the affidavit, Woodcox made unauthorized withdrawals from the union’s account 117 times; 113 of the withdrawals from ATMs located in Dubois County.

The prosecutor’s office says the investigation began after Woodcox as not reappointed to the secretary-treasurer position this past May; about the same time the local’s new secretary-treasurer requested bank statements from Woodcox he said he did not have have because they were destroyed when the garage at his home floode

The local union’s new secretary-treasurer contacted the U. S. Department of Labor after discrepancies were later found in the ATM withdrawals.
