Austin Matthews, Jr., 69, Rockport

Austin MatthewsAustin Matthews, Jr., 69, of Rockport, died Tuesday (June 21) at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was born in Jasper April 18, 1947, to Austin, Sr. and Barbara (Haas) Matthews. He married Alfrieda Elmer July 1, 1972, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.

Austin was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Vietnam conflict. He was also stationed in German. He retired from Laborers Union No. 561 in Evansville. He was a past manager of the St. Meinrad American Legion, the St. Meinrad Knights of Columbus, the Santa Claus American Legion, and the Twinkle Inn in Jasper. He owned the Double A restaurant in Mariah Hill and worked in a number of area furniture factories. He was a member of the Tell City Knights of Columbus, the Spencer County Memorial Forest Association, and the Jasper American Legion Post No. 147. He enjoyed fishing, meat processing, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Alfrieda Matthews, Rockport; one daughter, JoEllen Wassmer and husband Jeff, Evansville; two grandchildren, Kelsey and James Wassmer; two sisters, Diane Mc Allister, Louisville, and Patty Cacioppo and husband Richard, Omaha, Nebraska; five brothers, Robert Matthews and wife Barbara, Ferdinand, Richard Matthews, Florida, Kenneth Matthews and wife Mary, Greenwood, Paul Matthews, Florida, and Mark Matthews, Jasper; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Holst and Brenda Wolf, and one brother, John Matthews.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Becher-Kluesner  Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church or to the wishes of the family. Online Condolences may be made at Funeral services at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church in Jasper with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. American Legion Post No. 147 will conduct military gravesite rites.
