Rust Named New Lady Raiders Head Coach (AUDIO)

Huntingburg (NNDC) – Southridge High School did not have to look too far to find its next head girls basketball coach.

Thursday night, the Southwest Dubois School Board approved the hiring of Steve Rust, a long time Raider assistant coach in three sports, including boys basketball.

Rust, who is not a teacher, takes over for Greg Werner, who stepped down this past season to become new assistant principal at Southridge High School.

Southridge Athletic Director Brett Bardwell says Rust, who has also been an assistant coach in Football and Track & Field at Southridge, has earned the opportunity to become a head coach…

Rust takes over a Southridge girls basketball program that enjoyed tremendous success under Werner in his 12 years at the helm.

Under Werner, the Lady Raiders were 192-77 winning sectional titles in 2007 and 2014.

His team this past season upset 3A #1 Princeton (and the state’s all-time leading scorer Jackie Young) in the sectional semifinals but lost the next night in the championship game.
